Daniel A. Bateman, Class of 1972, age 67, passed away on February 27, 2021 at his home in New Port Richey, FL. Originally from Swatara Township, Daniel moved to Florida in 2005 and began working at Sun Toyota in 2007, where he remained employed until his passing. Daniel was born in Harrisburg on November 27, 1953 to the late Harry Bateman, Sr., and the late Shirley Bateman. He was a 1972 graduate of Dauphin County Technical School after attending Central Dauphin High School for his sophomore and junior years. After graduating he went to work for Gannet Fleming in Camp Hill. He also worked at several trucking companies in the Harrisburg area before finding his niche in auto sales, where he enjoyed a long career serving the needs of his customers. He was loved by his family and friends, who will always remember his kindness, his sense of humor and his quick willingness to help. Daniel is survived by his brother, Steven Bateman (Kim) along with several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, along with his older brothers Harry Bateman, Jr., and Michael Bateman. 

Bret E. Megargel , Class of 1987, passed away on March 13, 2021 in Hummelstown, PA after 9 years of a recurring illness.  He is survived by his mother, Carol Krieg, and his stepfather Eric Krieg of Hummelstown, Pa. Bret’s wife is Jenny Pano Benitez, and his 4 children are Mildred, Arturo, Owen and Evan, all of Tijuana, Mexico. He has a stepbrother, Jason, married to Maria who have 4 children of Middletown, PA. He also has a stepsister, Dana and her son of Rehoboth Beach, Del.
He has 2 Uncles, Wayne Hall of Carlisle, PA and Eric Megargel near Danville, PA.  He has 6 nieces and 2 nephews and many cousins. Bret shares the same birthday with his 96-year-old grandmother, Doris Hall of Harrisburg, PA.
Bret was preceded in death by his younger brother, Greg and his father Terry.
He was a 1987 graduate of Central Dauphin H.S. where he played football and baseball and was the top male student of his class. He was a 1991 graduate of Dartmouth College, majoring in Economics, and was a defensive back for their football team. In 1998 he earned his MBA from Stanford University.
After graduate school, Bret knew he wanted to focus on venture capitalism in the health care arena. He was co-founder of DexCom Inc., Avera Pharmaceuticals, MDEdge, and in 2006 he co-founded Zogenix Inc. where he has devotedly continued to work as Vice President of Corporate Development.
Bret loved life, always smiling, always uplifting, and was always willing to nurture and help anyone.
Bret was an avid reader, loved football (especially the Eagles and Penn State), soccer, baseball, and enjoyed fly-fishing, hiking, golf, working out, and photography. He also loved rock music, and was a U2 superfan, attending as many concerts as he could.
Above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, and son. He loved to watch his sons play soccer, playing games with his children, and loved just spending time with his family and friends.
Bret will be sadly, sadly missed by everyone whose life he touched.


Michael Patrick McCauley, Class of 1983, age 56 of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at Holy Spirit Hospital. Michael was born on October 26, 1964 in Camp Hill, PA, a son of the late Mary Lou (Schreck) McCauley and E. Roy "Mac" McCauley. Michael was a graduate of Central Dauphin High School Class of 1983 and received his bachelor's degree from Millersville University. Michael was a self-employed real estate appraiser, owning Real Estate Valuation Advisors of Camp Hill. He was a member of St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg. Michael was an active member of the local running community. He completed multiple marathons, including qualifying for the Boston Marathon, and ultramarathons. Michael recently turned his passion for running into a community for trail and ultrarunners, creating M1ndurance. Motivating and encouraging runners to chase limits, find success, or break through and like what they see on the other side. He used his running to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research through Hope Express and his 200+ mile Endure for a Cure event from Hershey Medical Center to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and back, tracing his son's cancer journey. Michael touched many lives with his larger than life personality, grit, motivation, and support. Michael is survived by his loving wife of 22 years Patricia J. (Evelhoch) McCauley, his two sons Ian M. and Lachlan P. McCauley, five siblings Timothy McCauley (Gina), Eileen Herb (Steve), Anne Maitland (Mike), Mary Ellen Sierhuis (Bill Davison) and Andrew McCauley (Sandy) as well as many nieces, nephews, loving family, and friends.

Deion L. Price, Class of 2024 , age 14, of Harrisburg, PA, unexpectedly passed on March 4, 2021 at UPMC Osteopathic Community Hospital. He was born in Harrisburg, PA, the son of the late Tarina M. Fields-Price and Donnell Price, Sr. He leaves behind brothers Tyhri Duncan, Donnell Price, Jr., Dylan Price, Caleb Duncan, and sisters Danielle Price and Dominque Price. Moreover, there are a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members who have been in his life forever giving him so very much love. He was a ninth-grade student at Central Dauphin High, a member of the freshman football team, and a member of the band. He was an active member of John Paul Scott Community Church and attended Bible study at Grace Bible Fellowship Church. Deion was a fun-loving young man with an infectious smile. He loved playing his trumpet, his keyboard, and drumming on anything in sight. He enjoyed playing online Xbox with his friends, walking through the mall, and helping his aunt in her garden. His outgoing personality, his helping hand, his laughter, and his unique hairstyle will be missed beyond measure. The family would like to thank everyone for your many acts of kindness during this difficult time. Your love and your prayers were the best gifts to help us through this sadness. God bless you.


Paul H. Janney, Jr., Class of 1963, age 75, W. Hanover Twp., died on March 5th after a courageous month-long battle with Covid-19. At the time of his passing, Paul was surrounded by family and his loving wife of 36 years, Edie. Paul was a 1963 Central Dauphin High School graduate. Paul is survived by his wife Edie, mother Ella Mae and brother Richard (Jill), stepchildren Brenda, Sandy and Brian, grandchildren, Derek, Courtney, Meghan, Lucas and Kristy, several nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his father, Paul Sr. and brother David. Paul was an avid Penn State fan thoroughly dedicated to his family. Paul was a compassionate man, his warm spirit will forever remain in our hearts.

Laura Jane Lindsey Martz, Class of 1963, age 75, of New Cumberland passed peacefully with her daughters by her side on March 5, 2021. She was the daughter of Bethel and Sarah Edith Lindsey, born April 16, 1945. She is survived by two daughters, Beth Ice (Doug) of Dillsburg and Lynette Weller (Dave) of Wellsville and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, John C. Lenker II. Laura retired from Pa Dept. of L&I and worked as an operator for Bell Telephone when her children were growing up. While Laura often created nicknames for others, she was known as Moe to her grandchildren or Petey to family and friends. Laura loved deeply and was great at taking care of you when you were not feeling your best. She had a big sweet tooth and appreciated a great cup of coffee.

Theodore Paul Russ, Class of 1956, age 82, went home with the Lord Saturday February 20, 2021. Born July 7, 1938 in Harrisburg, PA, was a graduate of Central Dauphin Class of 1956, continued his education at Harrisburg Area Center for Higher Education afterwards fulfilled his passion as a self employed businessman, obtained both his Real Estate and bailbondsman license. He worked at the Post Office, TRW and the SteelMill. Ted was the star of his own show His passions included football (Eagles), antiques and unique cars. We take comfort in knowing he is living in the Lord's mansion now. Ted is preceded in death by his parents Theodore S. and Anna Lugo Russ Surviving are four daughters; Roxanne Sandi Ray (Mark) Ginger Hope (Corey) Robin Russ, Bonnie Chapman (Dennis); 9 grandchildren; Beau, Brooke, Brandee, Fallon, Desmond, Devon, Mark, Darion, Brielle; and 13 great grandchildren.

Donna L. Fagan Buss, Class of 1968, age 71 of Harrisburg, died Saturday, February 27, 2021 at her home. Donna was born in Harrisburg and was the daughter of the late Roy and Nora May Fagan. She was a cashier at Weis Markets, Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg. She was formerly a CNA with Community General Osteopathic Hospital and the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. Donna is survived by her husband of 49 years, Fred Buss; her sisters, Barbara Salvador, Nancy Strock and Dorothy Costanza; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Carol D. Reitzel Hunter, Class of 1966, age 73, of Lower Paxton Township, passed away at her home on February 27, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Carol was born on March 19, 1947 in Harrisburg, PA to the late Robert and Geraldine (Hess) Reitzel. She was a 1966 graduate of Central Dauphin High School. Carol was retired from Mack Trucks, Inc., and she and her husband were owners of the former Paxton Street Pub. She was a member of the American Legion, the former Harrisburg ELKS, and the American Poolplayers Association (APA). Surviving is her husband, Jay A. Hunter; a daughter, Jaime D. Sillers-Beck and her wife, Candace of Harrisburg; two sons, Christopher A. Beck of Harrisburg, Jason A. Beck of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Jackson Sillers-Beck, Jessica Beck, Jenna Beck, Nicholas Sipe, and Rainer Beck. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Reitzel. Carol was known for her big heart and how she would help anyone who needed it. She could meet someone for the first time and have a conversation with them as if she had known them for years. She was known as "Mom" by the many people she touched over the years. She was an avid Steelers fan and enjoyed riding motorcycles. Carol loved animals, especially her cats. She had a flair for interior design, enjoyed playing pool and going on camping trips with her husband and friends, and was a passionate gardener. There wasn't a flower or plant she couldn't name, her favorite being an orchid. Carol was an amazing cook and loved having her family over for dinner, often filling everyone up with appetizers before dinner even started. She was great at giving advice, even when it wasn't what you wanted to hear. She lived life to the fullest and always put her family first. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy. Although, she is no longer physically here, her legacy will live on in our hearts and memories forever. 

Bradley L. Lenker, Class of 1985, of Marysville, PA., passed away peacefully, at UPMC West Shore Hospital on February 23, 2021, surrounded by his family. Bradley was preceded in death by his father, Jack H. Lenker; step father John M. Todoroff; paternal grandparents Charles and Frances Lenker of Harrisburg, PA.; and maternal grandparents, Charles and Mildred Wynn of Harrisburg, PA.Bradley is survived by his loving son, Kyle Lenker; mother Betty (Lenker) Todoroff; brother, Darrell (Zoe) Lenker of Oklahoma City, OK.; sister, Cindy (Richard) Price of Exeter, NH; step sister, Elaine (Allen) Tisher of Harrisburg; step brother, David Todoroff of Harrisburg, PA.; and step mother, Rose Lenker.Brad was born February 24, 1967 at Poly Clinic Hospital in Harrisburg. He was employed by E.H. Zimmerman Plumbing and Heating. Brad graduated from Central Dauphin High School where he played his love of baseball. He also played for the Lower Paxton Legion baseball team, and fast pitch softball for the Marysville VFW baseball team. Brad also coached little league in Marysville. He was an avid fisherman, loved the beach, crabbing, and hunting. 

Emil L. Kanyuck, Class of 1959, age 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 21, 2021 at his home. He is survived by his wife Sherilyn E. (Whitesel) Kanyuck, to whom he was married for 57 years. Born on August 13, 1941 in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late Emil and Virginia (Knapp) Kanyuck. He worked for Dupont as a tool and dye maker until his retirement in 1990. Emil enjoyed spending his time hunting. He traveled to Alaska, Montana and Colorado; his collection included many deer, bears, a goat and a mountain lion. He was an avid horse lover and would compete in barrel riding. Emil participated in shows and races in Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland and Pennsylvania. He was a previous member of the Wellsville Riding Club and the NRA. Emil is survived by his Jack Russel dog; many horses and numerous cousins.

Richard Ward, Class of 1960, Kalispell, Montana. Dr. Richard Elwood Ward passed away on February 23, 2021. Dick touched all who knew him with his wit, generosity, good humor, kindness and gentle spirit. He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania to Arlene and Harlow Ward on January 19, 1942. He was the eldest son of a staunchly Pennsylvania Dutch family that cared deeply about each other and about traditions, from canning home-grown tomatoes to the regular consumption of shoo fly pie. As a boy, Dick was very proud to attain the rank of Eagle Scout and attend Philmont Scout Ranch. At Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg, PA, he was on the wrestling, tennis and football teams, sang in a quartet and choir, and took to the stage as an actor, magician and self-trained hypnotist. He loved the theatre. He even had a summer circus job, where he was paid to box a kangaroo and wrestle a gorilla. 
At Pennsylvania State University, Dick joined the SAE fraternity, making life-long friends. For the 1963 homecoming parade the SAE brothers and the Tri-Delta sisters worked together on a float. Somehow it wasn’t until the day of the parade that he met Diane Elaine Rogers and was smitten. He played guitar and would serenade her with Kingston Trio songs. After Dick graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering, he worked at the Dixie Cup Factory while waiting for Diane to finish her degree. They married on July 31, 1965. Newly wed, they lived in Easton and then in New Jersey, where Dick worked for the NY Transit Authority. In 1967 they moved to Morgantown, West Virginia for Dick to enter a PhD program at West Virginia University. He wrote his dissertation on the concept of a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system, a model light rail system, which was built in Morgantown in 1975. After a year at the University of Leeds in Yorkshire, Dick taught in the School of Engineering at WVU until 1986, where he enjoyed mentoring students from around the world. He served on the board of the College Industry Council on Material Handling Education and eventually joined the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), in Charlotte, NC as VP of Education. He was extremely well-respected and liked in his professional life, and remained proud of his many accomplishments in his field.
Dick and Diane had three children - Shannon, Jennifer and Kevin. Dick loved being a father, and supported his children in all their endeavors. During their year in Yorkshire, the family travelled in a blue VW bus, hiking the dales, exploring ruined abbeys, and stopping at pubs to sample ales and collect coasters and beer towels. Back home in West Virginia, Dick shared his scouting knowledge on frequent family camping trips to state parks. He also passed his love of music and theatre to his children, through regular attendance at WVU’s Cultural Arts Center. The family were members of Drummond Chapel United Methodist Church. He had a strong moral compass and a fatherly sense of practical wisdom. He always knew what to do or say for any situation.  
Dick nurtured a life-long love of travel and taught his children to wonder about and explore the wider world. He always loved England and Europe, but also enjoyed visiting Japan and Germany on business trips. When his daughter Shannon lived in France and Costa Rica, he visited each place twice. Upon his retirement, his MHIA colleagues supported Dick’s dream family vacation at a farmhouse in Tuscany. He and Diane also enjoyed travel in Ireland and along the Danube. Dick always loved trying new foods, sampling local beer and wine, and talking with people wherever he went.  One of his great joys in life was sharing a special meal with friends and family, often spending days planning, shopping and cooking. He could also tell you exactly where to go to get the best food or beer in many cities. 
In 2006, Dick and Diane joined their daughter Jen in Whitefish, Montana where they established their own small retirement farm. They brought with them their beloved Paso Fino horses and a border collie to herd their growing flock of merino sheep. Each Tuesday for many years, they could be found at the farmer’s market in Whitefish, selling colorful skeins of hand-dyed yarn. They wasted no time becoming involved in the community. He and Diane joined the Whitefish United Methodist Church, and were known for bringing one of their lambs to the Easter service each year. Dick served on the board of the Alpine Theatre Project, reveling in the Broadway talent ATP brought to their small Montana town. He also supported the Performing Arts Center and Wag Dog Park. Dick could often be found at Montana Coffee Traders and local breweries, where he got to know and be loved by many. He taught as a substitute in the Whitefish schools and enjoyed going to Sweet Peaks, not just for the ice cream, but because the staff were students who knew and loved him. 
Dick was gracious and kind, a gentleman who maintained a friendly twinkle in his eye and a sense of humor to the end. He was given great care and love at Echoview Assisted Living in his final months. He is survived by his wife Diane Rogers Ward, sister Joanna Ward, brother Robert Ward and their families, and daughter Shannon Ward Earle and son-in-law Patrick Earle of Takoma Park, MD and daughter Jen Ward Croskrey and son-in-law Jerry Croskrey of Whitefish, MT and son Kevin Richard Ward of Marshall, NC, along with grandchildren Skyla, Verite, Adelaide and Emerson Ward, Aidan and Owen Croskrey, and Riana, Ailyn and Kiera Earle.

Michelle M. Matiskella Williams, Class of 1984, age 55 of Harrisburg, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 18, 2021 at her home, after a long battle with ovarian cancer, with her family by her side. Michelle was born in Harrisburg and was the daughter of the late William and Arline Matiskella. She was retired from the PA State Police, where she was a legal assistant, after 35 years of service. She was a supporter to the Humane Society of Greater Harrisburg and Big Guy Littles World Chiauhuas Sanctuary. She enjoyed walking, her church, friends and family, traveling and the love of Chihauhuas. She was a member of Road to Emmaus Presbyterian Church. Michelle is survived by her husband of 7 years, Scott L. Williams, her brothers, William Matiskella and Eric Matiskella; sister-in-law, LeAnn Matiskella, Step mother Bobby L. Matiskella, step brother Pete M Monismith, mother and father in law Edgar and Shirley Williams, brother and sister in laws Holly and Vale Turner and Phillip and Sherry Sterner.seven nieces, four nephews, nine great-nieces and nephews. 

Kathleen “Kathy” Marie (Walton) Havran, Class of 1972, age 67, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021.  Kathy was born on Monday, December 28, 1953, in Harrisburg to Patricia Claire (Hoke) Lutz and the late Richard Allen Walton. 
Kathy’s survivors include her mother, Patricia Claire (Hoke) Lutz; her sister Carol Michele Oliveira; her niece Caitlin Nicole Oliveira and fiancé Kyle McLaughlin; her two nephews: Shane Michael Oliveira and significant other, Paris Winston, and Jaden Isaiah Figueroa; and her beloved Newfie, Lily. She is also survived by a rediscovered son, Marc Silverstein, of Holland, PA; her three newly- discovered grandchildren; and a precious great grandson. She was able to reconnect with Marc and his family, after being separated by adoption for nearly 50 years.
Kathy graduated from Central Dauphin High School as part of the class of 1972 and earned an Associated Degree from Harrisburg Area Community College.  She retired as a Financial Analyst from Highmark Blue Cross in Camp Hill, in 2017.  She was a very active member of Obedience Training Class of Harrisburg New-Penn-Del Newfoundland Club and the Newfoundland Club of American. Kathy was a lifelong member of Penbrook United Church of Christ in Harrisburg.  Kathy’s passion was Newfoundland dogs; over the years, she had five.  She loved taking them to dog shows.  Kathy always looked beautiful, making sure her hair and nails were just right.  She loved sail boating, and at one time was a scuba diver.  Kathy will be remembered as a spirited, spunky woman – a real firecracker.

Franklin D. Linn Sr., Class of 1960, age 79, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at Hershey Medical Center surrounded by his children. Born July 30, 1941 in Oberlin, PA; he was the son of the late Milton and Cora (Derick) Linn; and preceded in death by his wife, Paulette Linn. Surviving are his children, Franklin D. Linn Jr (Lesli), Stephanie M. Molnar (Mark) and Tamara S. Miller (David); 4 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother and 3 sisters. Frank retired from the PA House of Representatives, where he served as a Specialist in Intergovernmental Affairs, and served as President of the Board of Lower Swatara Twp. Commissioners. Frank portrayed Santa Claus for over 50 years and was a graduate of Central Dauphin High School, class of 1960, where he served as class president. Frank was a member of PSATC, Lower Swatara Lions Club, Steelton Swatara Lodge 775 F&AM, American Red Cross, and the Dauphin County Republican Party. He was a proud supporter of the Lower Swatara Fire and Police Departments. Frank was on the Penn State Advisory Board and many other community organizations.

Steven "Steve" R. Irwin, Class of 1969, age 69, of Dauphin PA passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Steve was born in Harrisburg on June 18, 1951, the son of William J. Irwin and Geraldine M. (Schreadley) Irwin of Stony Creek Valley. He resided in Dauphin, PA, where he, his friends, and family built his forever home. He was the widower of Sheila L. (Strohm) Irwin. Steve is lovingly remembered by his children, Lisa M. Irwin and Kyle S. Irwin of Dauphin, PA. Steve is survived by his sisters and brothers, Jeanne E. Irwin, William R. Irwin, Michael C. Irwin, and Jennifer E. Irwin Butch. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dillon M. Becker and Megan E. (Becker) Dembi and a great-grandchild, Payton R. Becker. A 1969 Central Dauphin High School graduate, Steve went on to complete his electrical apprenticeship and became one of the most respected electricians in the area. He was a member of IBEW 143 in Harrisburg, PA. In 1993, Steve formed his own company called I.E.T. Inc. which handled commercial high-voltage electrical testing for area businesses and hospital/health systems. Steve was an avid deer hunter, fisherman, and race car fan. He enjoyed watching western movies and had passion for fixing old radios and electronics.

Daniel (Dan) Barbuscio, Class of 1978, age 60, of Davenport, Florida passed away February 3, after an extended illness. Dan was born December 22, 1960 in Harrisburg. He was the son of Dottie Koppenhaver and the late Antonio Barbuscio. He graduated from Central Daupin Highschool in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany for 4 years. He is survived by his wife, Melanie McDonald Barbuscio and his children, Daniel II, Martina, (husband Sean), Robert and two grandsons, Memphis and Daniel III. He is also survived by his brother, Ken Koppenhaver II, and 3 sisters, Kelly Koppenhaver, Dena Stump, and Michele Devaney. Dan and Melanie resided in Lethbridge, Canada most of the year, but traveled to Florida in the winter to enjoy time with their children and grandsons.

Kenneth R. Althouse, Class of 1961, went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 2, 2021, at the age of 77. Born in Enhaut, PA on March 26, 1943, he graduated from Central Dauphin High School and was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was retired from Bethlehem Steel where he worked for 46 years. Ken was a devout Christian who had a love of nature and animals. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin and outdoors, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Ken will be greatly missed by his wife of 55 years, Donna (Kepner); his sons Kenneth A. (Kimberly) and David (Katrina); daughter Kelly (William); his grandsons Dawson, Gavin and Tony; granddaughters Jordan and Jillian, all of Harrisburg; and brothers James (Wanda) of McAllisterville and Richard (Connie) of Marysville.

Brenda J. (Goodling) Hied, retired CDHS Faculty member, age 70, late of Shippensburg, formerly of Harrisburg, departed this life on the afternoon of Thursday, February 4, 2021, at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg Hospital. She was born on April 3, 1950, in Chambersburg, a daughter of Alma (Fry) Goodling and the late Richard Goodling. Brenda worked as a teacher at the Central Dauphin High School from where she retired. She has been spending the last two years devoting her life to her mother's care. As an educator and more recently as a caregiver, Brenda gave selflessly of herself and she will be forever loved and missed by her family and friends. In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sisters, Barbara G. Clay and husband Mark of Southport, NC, Betty J. Morrow of South Mountain, and Beverly J. Goodling of Savage, MN; one niece, Stefanie Goodling; three nephews, Adam and Alan Gutshall and Jay Goodling; three great nieces Hailey, Ava, and Olivia; and three great nephews, Caden, Marshall, and Emmett; and two step-daughters, Tina and Melissa. Brenda was preceded in death by her father and a brother-in-law, Gary Morrow.

Constance "Connie" Suttles McKeen, Class of 1959, age 79, of Alexandria, VA., passed away peacefully in Vestavia Hills, AL. on January 31, 2021. She suffered a long struggle with dementia and was recently diagnosed with COVID-19. She was born Saturday, September 6, 1941 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Joseph Suttles, and Lauretta Jean Suttles. Connie is survived by her only sibling, Jan Walker (Mark), her son Richard McKeen of Birmingham, AL., her daughter Susan Bruno (Sam) of Vestavia Hills, AL. and her much adored grandchildren Sara Bruno, Katie Bruno and Samantha Paguia-Gomes. Connie was a graduate of Central Dauphin High School where she was a majorette and won the William D. Meike language award at graduation. She then attended Gettysburg College where she earned her degree in education. She spent 27 years as a military spouse, moving from one place to another, hosting dinner parties and gathering many life long friends along the way. With her teaching degree she taught troops how to read and write. She even substitute taught at her children's high school in Germany much to their delight and the delight of all of their friends who attended school there. She was the cool mom that everyone loved. After relocating back to the United States from Germany, she began a successful career in real estate in Alexandria, VA. She worked 28 years for Long & Foster in the Old Town, Va area. Connie always had a cheerful demeanor. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and loyal friend. Reading books, and waiting for the next Washington Redskins game to start were top on her list. Her favorite trips were to the beach with her family and friends. Connie loved her martinis and was a strong competitor in a game of Scrabble.

Leon Henry Messner, retired CDHS faculty, was born June 22, 1924 in Wiconisco, Pennsylvania to the late Helen and Earl Messner. He died January 21, 2021. He attended the Wiconisco Public Schools graduating in 1941. He entered the United States Army serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was assigned to a landing craft heading for Japan when the decision by President Truman to drop the atomic bomb abruptly ended the conflict. He served in the Philippines, New Guinea and Wake Island before he became part of the forces that occupied Japan. Leon entered Bloomsburg University under the GI Bill and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree that resulted in teaching certification for business subjects. He later completed a Master's in Education program at Penn State University as well as principal's certification at Bucknell University. Leon taught at Williamstown High School where he met his wife, Betty Messner. He has one son, Dr. Steven Messner and five grandchildren. He has loved being able to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, looking forward to the many family gatherings. Leon was the last supervising principal of the Williamstown Joint School District. In the late sixties, he accepted a teaching position with Central Dauphin High School to teach business and computer applications. His wife Betty, was also hired as the Supervisor of Reading for Central Dauphin Schools. She served in the United States Navy Pharmaceutical Corps during World War II. Leon will be interred with her at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Leon was an avid golfer until his late eighties and still played a number of string instruments until his mid-nineties. He made a point of attending both Wisconisco and Williamstown class reunions. He loved playing the banjo and mandolin at these reunions and at family gatherings. He was particularly proud to have been head girls' basketball coach at Williamstown Joint High School as well as assistant coach for boys' basketball during the Frank Snyder basketball era. He lived in and maintained his own home until January 1, 2020 when he established a residency at Country Meadows Assisted Living in Mechanicsburg.

Robert "Bob" Eugene Schreffler, Class of 1959, of Arvada, Colorado passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 23, 2021 after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. Born in Harrisburg, PA on January 11, 1942 to Harry R. Schreffler and Corene B. McNeal, Bob attended Central Dauphin High School and graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1964 with a degree in Landscape Architecture. He enjoyed a long career with the National Park Service, retiring in 1995 as Manager, Eastern Team Branch of Park Roads and Trails. During his career he worked on numerous high-profile projects including the well-known Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Natchez Trace Parkway and Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Bob married his college sweetheart, H. Jean Schreffler in 1964 and had seven children together. They are members of St. Joan of Arc Parish where Bob was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved spending time in the outdoors with his family and remained an avid Penn State Nittany Lion fan to the end. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean, of Arvada, their seven children, Robert H.G. Schreffler, Andrew J. Schreffler, James P. Schreffler, Michael J. Schreffler, Mary C. Norton, Christopher C. Schreffler, Elizabeth A. Schreffler, 32 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and his sister, Donna F. DelGrosso of Owings, MD.

Linda J. Herb Zuvich, Class of 1960, age 78, of Harrisburg, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Hershey Medical Center surrounded by her family. Born July 19, 1942 in Harrisburg; she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Bernd) Herb; preceded in death by her husband, Henry Zuvich; son, Gregory J. Zuvich; and sisters, Mary Miller and Susan Horner. Surviving are two daughters, Maria L. Torres (Jay) and Christine L. Trautwein (Brooke); son, Keith Martinez (Charlotte); 5 grandchildren, Mallori and Madison Martinez, Taylor Trautwein, Michael Butchko, Jayden Torres and Gregory Trautwein; sister, Peg Salvaggio (Jim); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Linda retired as Director of Personnel for PA Department of Treasury. Linda enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially cheering on her grandsons at their sporting events.

Nancy L McCombs Wolf, Class of 1958, age 80, died peacefully on January 16, 2021, surrounded by her family. Her legacy of love and kindness will stay with us forever. The greatest joy in Nancy's life was her family. She was born on March 3, 1940, in Harrisburg and was the daughter of Donald and Mary McCombs and sister to Carol Suhr and Sally Smith, who preceded her in death. Nancy deeply loved her two sons and their wives, Michael and Lisa (Horning) and Steven and Kristen (Svec). Her proudest title was that of Nana to three beautiful grandchildren, Campbell, Carly,and Kyra. She was their biggest cheerleader. Nancy brought joy wherever she went. She could often be found making the rounds at yard sales in the area or happily reading a book on the swing in her yard. Nancy always had a smile on her face and was very often described as the life of the party.

With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Allan Howard Wimer, Class of 1963, (Naples, Florida), who passed away on January 7, 2021 at the age of 75.

Harold Burkholder, Class of 1963, age 75, went home to our Lord on January 13,2021, surrounded by his loving family. Harold was born in Harrisburg, PA to the late Lowell and Katie Burkholder. He was a middle school history and geography teacher in the Central Dauphin School District for 31 years. After his retirement in 1999, he worked at Book of the Month Club and Bobby Rahal Toyota. Harold was a wonderful husband, a loving father, an adoring grandfather, and loyal friend. He loved the Lord and his daily life revealed his commitment to Jesus Christ. He was a long-time member of Country and Town Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg, where he was active as a leader in their small group ministry. He had also served as a deacon of the church. Previously, he was also a long-time member of Mechanicsburg 1st Church of God. Harold was a lover of history, and could often be found reading history books and magazines. He had many interests, including antiques, model trains, comic books, and coins. He also served as Treasurer of the Central PA Thunderbird Club, and loved his time driving his 1960 T-Bird. Harold is survived by the love of his life, Frances, to whom he was married for 52 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Kathryn (Brian) Keffer of Hanover, his son Kenneth (Stephanie) Burkholder of Mechanicsburg ,and his 4 grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob, Caleb, and Emma Burkholder. In addition, there are many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and his loyal feline companion, Sam.

The Rev. Jay E. Zimmerman, Class of 1970, age 68, of Gettysburg, PA entered into eternal life on Wednesday afternoon, January 13, 2021 at Gettysburg Hospital. Born June 8, 1952 in Philipsburg, PA, he was the son of the late Rev. Dr. Elwood and Dolores (Johnson) Zimmerman. He was the husband of Linda P. (Meals) Zimmerman, of Gettysburg, to whom he was married for 46 years. After graduation from Central Dauphin High School in 1970, Jay graduated from Lycoming College in 1974 where he studied religion and history before obtaining a M.Div. from Wesley Theological Seminary in 1977. He served in ministry to the following United Methodist Congregations: Bald Eagle (1977-80), Harrisburg (Paxton 1980-1996), Waynesboro (Christ Church 1996-2004), and Gettysburg (2004-2018). In addition to his wife, Jay is survived by his daughter, Erin L. Rochefort and granddaughter, Adrianna Rochefort, of Gettysburg, PA, his daughter, Lauren M. Rice, son-in-law, Garrett Rice, and future granddaughter in June 2021, of Wilmington, DE, and his sister, Paula Zimmerman, of Mechanicsburg, PA.

Mackenzie P. Mulroy, Class of 2015, age 24, of Harrisburg, passed away Saturday, January 9th, 2021 as the result of a car accident. Born in Harrisburg on October 21, 1996, he was known as "Mac" to all. Mac was brimming with good energy – generous with smiles and encouragement. A graduate of Central Dauphin High School and Penn State's Smeal College of Business, Mac worked as a project manager for Zukauckas Landscapes and Hardscapes. He adored his family, friends, and his dogs. Mac had a kind heart and was passionate about animal rescue. He discovered his love of soccer at the age of four and played all through his life. He loved golf, travel, and kayaking. Surviving are his father, Dennis M. Mulroy of Camp Hill; his mother, Melissa L. (Geise) Fritchey and her husband, Derick of Harrisburg; paternal grandparents, Jerome and Joan Mulroy; maternal grandparents, David and Georgia Coffman, Thomas Geise and Roberta Coulter; two brothers, Timothy Mulroy and his wife, Christina of CA, Carson Etshied of Harrisburg; his sister, Montana Mulroy of Harrisburg; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Michael E. Shovlin, Class of 2015, age 24, of Lower Paxton Twp., died Saturday, January 9, 2021, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born on September 20, 1996, in Harrisburg, he was the son of Cheryl A. (Ruble) Shovlin of Harrisburg and the late Timothy M. Shovlin. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his older brothers and sister, Tyler J. Shovlin (Kati) of Elkhorn, NE, Ashley E. Samoila (Alex) of Bozeman, MT, and Thomas M. Shovlin (Sara) of Littleton, NH; his maternal grandmother, Kathleen M. Ruble of New Cumberland; aunts and uncles, Dr. Joseph and Lisa Shovlin, Gary and Jo Anna Shovlin and Dr. Dean Ruble; cousins, Ryan Shovlin (Jena), Erin Solomon (Scott) and Justin Ruble; nephews and niece, Grayson Shovlin, Kaiden Samoila, and Briar Shovlin. In addition to his father, Michael was preceded in death by grandparents; Cloyd E. Ruble, Cornelius J. Shovlin and Betty E. Shovlin. Michael was a 2015 graduate of Central Dauphin High School and a 2019 graduate of Penn State University. Michael was known for his big smile, infectious laugh, caring heart, ability to bring people together and his strong love of his friends, family, and dog, Jax. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his quick wit, and his kind heart. Sports were an important part of Michael's life. He was a devoted Penn State Football fan and a Philadelphia Eagles fan almost from birth. Sea Isle City, NJ was another place that he loved to visit with his family and friends, and where so many happy memories in his life were made. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him. 


Zachary J. Kijowski, Class of 2015, age 24, of Harrisburg, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021 as the result of an automobile accident. Born on December 3, 1996 in Harrisburg, PA. He was a graduate of Central Dauphin High School Class of 2015 and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Class of 2019 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. He had worked for the Harrisburg Senators minor league team throughout high school and college, with the dream of working for the Washington Nationals. He reached his dream and was going to be a tracman operator for the Washington Nationals. Zach was an avid golfer, a sports memorabilia collector, and was passionate about sports, loved going to Myrtle Beach, and camping. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Donna L. and Edward Wilson of Harrisburg, his father and stepmother, Michael J. and Amanda Kijowski of Palmyra, brothers, Gregory J. Knopp of Denver, NC, Brandon Wilson, of Harrisburg, sisters, Hadley Q. Kijowski of Palmyra, Emily Wilson of Harrisburg, paternal grandparents, John and Sandra Kijowski of Pittsburgh, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ray and Charon Hironimus. Zach was loved by many people will be sorely missed. 

Linda S. Altland Leister, Class of 1972, age 64, of Etters, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2018. Born on September 11, 1953, in Harrisburg, PA, a daughter of the late Lester Altland and Winifred (Koffran) Vucenic. Linda is survived by her siblings; Tom (Kathy) Altland, Sally (Ken) Watkins, and Steve (Janet) Altland; all of Harrisburg, and many nieces and nephews. 

Carol Spayde Wevodau, Class of 1964, age 74 of Mechanicsburg, died Sunday, January 3, 2021 in Claremont Nursing Home, Carlisle. Carol was born in Harrisburg and was the daughter of the late Russell and Jessie Spayde. She was Director and owner of the Wevodau Dance Center, President of the 32 Pick Up Bowling League, a member of Dance Educators of America, a board member for the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council and an instructor at the Harrisburg Dance Conservatory. Carol is survived by her husband of 56 years, Larry Wevodau, and her daughters, Christy Smyers and April Wevodau. 

Kim E. Kauffman, Class of 1971, age 67, of Harrisburg, PA passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at UPMC Harrisburg. He was born May 12, 1953 in Harrisburg, PA to the late Lincoln E. (Gene) and Roxanne R. (Henry) Kauffman.
Kim was a 1971 graduate of Central Dauphin High School and attended HACC.  After 15 years as a heating and air conditioning technician, he retired from Messiah College in 2015. An avid outdoorsman, Kim enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and loved watching the wildlife from his home in the woods. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Gun Club, American Legion #1001 and the William Penn Social Club. Kim is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Sherrie Lynn (Frye) Kauffman, his children, Lindsey B. of Hanoi, Vietnam and Grant A. of Harrisburg. Also surviving is his sister, Karla Bear and her husband, Robert and their son, Chad of Mt. Holly Springs, PA. Kim was preceded in death by his nephew, Scott A. Bear.
